Abalone Farm Tour and Ragged Point Lunch

September 16, 2007

~26 CCCR'ers Gathered in the Morro Bay High School Parking lot and departed north to visit the Abalone Farm north of Cayucos. Not visible from the road, we naivgated a dirt road about a mile long to the parking lot at the Abalone Farm. Brad, the sales manager of the Farm led us on a tour of nearly all things Abalone. We saw the tanks the Abs are held in prior to "breeding", learned about Ab breeding. We were treated to learning how to tell a male from a female (abalone that is). We saw babie abs, toddler abs, teenager abs and young adult abs. This facility produces about a million abs a year. Near the end of the tour we learned some different ways to cook abs (we'll have to try the recipes).

In the flyer for this event, we said that many abs are sent to Japan. We were told that this was not presently true in that they now have a large enough demand that they do not export much.

The view from this facility is prime coastline, seen mostly by surfers and abalone. (those that can peer over the walls of their tanks.

Following the Tour, we left for lunch at Ragged Point. They had set some parking places aside for us and we had a great time.

At Ragged Point

We had a nice lunch, then presented a cake to Martin who is 39 again. The cake was done by Carlock's Bakery in Los Osos. They made the Boxster in the picture from our model and a picture of Martin's car to get the color. We surprised him.

This was a fun and informative September event. I believe all ~26 of us enjoyed ourselves.

Santa Barbara Botanical Garden and Lunch

August 26, 2007

~26 CCCR'ers left Costco SLO and navigated mostly back roads to Santa Barbara.
Martin Howell surprised us by adding a bit more back road to his route
by turning left onto Stagecoack Rd while the rest of us drove up Hwy 152 to go over San Marcos Pass. I shoulda led the group that way is it IS quite scenic.
Lunch was good, the restaurant was able to seat us quickly, the day was a delight, and I think most at least enjoyed the Botanical Gardens.
